Tuesday 7th May, 2013

Our first day in Auckland had been very damp but with the sun shining brightly we decided we were going to spend today out and about and started with the Lonely Planet’s walking tour of the city centre.

This 4.5km walk took us round the hidden nooks and architectural treats of Auckland’s Central Business District starting with St Kevin’s Arcade and ending along the quayside. The day was beautiful so we hopped on a ferry across the bay to Devonport where we enjoyed a glorious walk along the beach, dipped our toes in the Pacific for the first time and headed to the top of North Head.

There were beautiful views of Auckland from the summit – after only 36 hours in the country we really can’t understand why Kiwis would ever want to leave their country. It’s such an idyll and today was perfect: glorious sunshine, no clouds in the sky, about 20 degrees C and no wind. This is apparently late Autumn!

We rounded off a great day with our first visit to Burgerfuel (according to Christine: ‘the best burger I’ve ever tasted in my life’) and a trip to the pictures to see Ironman 3.

Daily distance travelled: 15km

Total distance travelled: 19,903km
